The kids went out at recess today to play. It was lightly raining... so their solution was to set up a Survival Camp uder the trees in our backyard. After about an hour they were having such a good time that I decided to make them some Survival Food. I remember as a kid thinking that eating food or snacks in tents or forts was the coolest thing. They were all smiles when I called them and sent them up to their camp with a thermos full of Hot macaroni and cheese, snack bags filled with graham crackers, a marshmellow, and some chocolate chips (Smores of sorts) and a jug of water. I told them they needed to survive at least 2 hours on their rations.
Within 10 minutes I could tell that they were digging into their hot rations..I thought to myself "they will never last 2 hours at this rate." Much to my surprise they did last the full 2 hours on their rations and a full 3 ++ hours outside working and playing together. That may not seem like alot, but for them to be playing, working together, and pretending for that long was such a nice treat for this mama to see. When they came in we went over a survival skills checklist and talked about their adventure.
All in all it was such a great HS afternoon. The kids decided to leave their survival camp in place. They told me they were going to go out there when they were fighting or not getting along because, at camp they had to all learn to work together and agree. :)
Great lesson!
